Up-Right installation takes under 30 minutes on most vehicles with existing crossbars. This Up-Right installation guide covers every step — from unboxing to your first test drive — with no drilling, no permanent modifications, and no special tools beyond what’s included in the box.

Up-Right Installation — What You’ll Need

  • GearRAK Up-Right system (all hardware included)
  • Existing crossbars mounted to your vehicle — factory OEM or aftermarket
  • Hex key or wrench (included in the box)

If you don’t yet have crossbars installed, see the GearRAK roof rack compatibility guide for compatible crossbar brands. Popular options include Thule and Yakima crossbar systems.

Up-Right Installation — What’s in the Box

  • Up-Right rod holder tubes (holds up to 4 rods)
  • Crossbar mounting clamps
  • Locking hardware for each tube
  • Installation hardware and hex key
  • Installation instructions

Up-Right Installation — Step by Step

Step 1 — Confirm Crossbar Compatibility

Before starting your Up-Right installation, confirm your crossbars fit GearRAK mounting clamps. The system fits aero bars, square bars, round bars, and most factory OEM crossbar profiles. See the compatibility guide if you’re unsure of your bar type.

Step 2 — Position the Mounting Clamps

Place the mounting clamps on your crossbars at the desired position. Center the system on the crossbars for the most stable mount. Leave enough space between the system and your roofline for comfortable rod loading and unloading.

Step 3 — Secure the Clamps

Tighten the mounting clamps using the included hardware. Tighten firmly — clamps should not move under lateral hand pressure. Do not overtighten on aero-style bars to avoid deforming the bar profile.

Step 4 — Attach the Rod Holder Assembly

Connect the rod holder tubes to the mounting bracket according to the included instructions. Confirm all connection points are secure before loading rods.

Step 5 — Adjust Rod Holder Spacing

Adjust spacing between individual holders to accommodate your rod lengths and reel sizes. Holders should be spaced so reels have clearance from adjacent tubes when loaded.

Step 6 — Safety Check

Before loading rods, check the following:

  • All mounting clamps fully tightened on crossbars
  • Rod holder assembly securely connected to mounting bracket
  • No movement in the system under hand pressure
  • Locking mechanisms on each tube operate correctly

Step 7 — Load Test Rods and Lock

Load rods before driving. Lock each rod in its tube and do a light pull test to confirm the locking mechanism holds securely before your first drive.

Step 8 — Test Drive

Take a short low-speed test drive before highway use. After returning, check all clamps and connections. Everything secure — Up-Right installation is complete.

Up-Right Installation Tips

  • Check clamp tightness before long trips — clamps can loosen slightly after initial Up-Right installation. A quick check before highway driving on the first few trips is good practice.
  • Don’t overtighten on aero bars — aero profile crossbars have thinner walls than square bars. Tighten firmly but stop before the clamp deforms the bar.
  • Watch the installation video — available on the Up-Right product page. Watching it before starting makes the process faster.
